PSA: My friend Melanie’s new book is out! The Adventures of Squirky the Alien #5: How Do You Get to the Garden Galaxy? by Melanie Lee and illustrated by David Liew is the fifth in a series of six picture books about adoption. Melanie wrote these books for her preschool-aged son; he was adopted as an infant.
How Do You Get to the Garden Galaxy? is the penultimate book in the series, and Melanie writes in her author’s note, “I’m constantly being reminded that even as I write this story for my son, his own life story, and his adoption story in particular, will be very much based on his own inclinations and decisions in the long run.”
She continues, “Like Squirky, there will come a time when my son has to make major decisions regarding his birth parents—whether he wants to search for them, how far he wants to go in this search, and what he is prepared to find out.”
Who Is the Red Commander? also includes notes from an adoptee and a birth mother. #FliptheScript, as they say.
How Do You Get to the Garden Galaxy? is, possibly, my favorite book of the five so far. It ends with a cliffhanger or sorts, and I can’t wait to read the conclusion to this beautiful—and important, especially in Singapore where such resources for adoptees are so rare—series.
FYI, Melanie, David, and Squirky will be visiting Times Bookstore at Waterway Point in Punggol on Saturday, March 19 at 2pm, and Woods in the Books at Forum on Orchard on Friday, March 25 at 2pm.
