PSA: You must watch Women For the Record, an inspirational series of 50 videos featuring poetry, prose and playwriting by women from Singapore. The project is a collaboration between Hedgebrook, a Whidbey Island-based literary nonprofit where many (most?) of my women writer friends have been in residence at some point, and EtiquetteSG, a multidisciplinary platform that supports, develops and showcases art, writing, music and film by women that address gender as a subject of discourse.
This week’s featured writer is my dear friend Yu-Mei Balasingamchow. the co-author of Singapore: A Biography (2009). Her short fiction has been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2014 and selected for the Epigram Books Collection of Best New Singaporean Short Stories (2013 and 2015). She is working on her first novel and is currently an Honorary Fellow of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.
Previous readers include novelist Jolene Tan, poet and performance artist Stephanie Dogfoot, poet Teng Qian Xi, and speculative short fiction writer JY Yang among others.
