So, I got an extra-early sneak preview of the Singapore Art Book Fair 2014 (because I thought the media preview started at 3pm, and not 6pm).*
Singapore Art Book Fair features artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines by more than 35 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions, and independent publishers. It was lovely to catch up with friends of notabilia: La Libreria, Nguan, Typesettingsg, and Grey Projects, among others. But it was wonderful to discover new artists: Delere Press, a boutique print-on-demand publisher of art books; Olivia Lee, creator of The Golden Rules: A Divine Sketchbook (which I bought); Squelchzines, founders of Zha Zi Dian Zinestore, a zine store (of Squelchzines’ fares, I loved Smee the Cat by Nathania Zaini, a bibelot, or finely crafted miniature book, best); and Magpie Magazines, an independent e-tailer of art, design, and lifestyle periodicals.
Organized by independent bookstore and publisher BooksActually and Singapore-based creative consultancy Hjgher, the fair opens to public on Friday, November 14 at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Gillman Barracks. The weekend’s fringe events include performance by The Observatory, an exhibition by family art collective Holycrap.sg, a public interactive coloring mural by Speak Cryptic, and craft workshops by The Redundant Shop.
The fair is FREE. GO if you have any interest at all in publishing or the book arts (bookbinding, artists’ books, papermaking, calligraphy, letterpress printing and typography, and paper decorating).

* Thank you to Renee Ting, Manager at BooksActually, for walking me through, despite me being three hours early, and giving me a beautiful bag of swag!
