I told ya there’d be lots of Navaratri posts!

We spent Sunday evening at The Temple of Fine Arts’ Deepakalanjali festival, its annual Navaratri fair. We feasted on vegetarian food (appams and pav bhaji nom nom) and caught several performances, including a medley of regional devotional songs by TFA’s Hindustani vocal students. Many of the tunes were in praise of the Mother Goddess, given the occasion, including compositions sung in Gujarati, Marathi, and Rajasthani. The final number, “Dama Dam Mast Qalandar,” honored the most revered Sufi saint of Sindh, Shahbaz Qalandar (who worked for Hindu-Muslim unity in Sindh). It was quite a rare treat for my toddler to hear a song of her own people!
