Navaratri 2014

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

We spent our Saturday evening at Singapore Swimming Club, kicking off the Hindu festive season. It is navratri (literally “nine nights”), a festival dedicated to the worship of the nine avatars of the Goddess Durga. This evening, we danced the garba and the dandiya raas, Gujarati folk dances always performed in Durga’s honor, at Singapore Gujarati Society’s annual celebration. OK, OK, I didn’t dance much; I had a toddler perched on my hip. But both she and I were mesmerized by the dancers’ swirls and twirls and taken by their breathtakingly beautiful chaniya cholis.

If you are keen on celebrating Gujarati-style, Navaratri 2014 continues next weekend. Tickets are SG$40 for non-members and children under five are free!

Tonight elsewhere, the season was being celebrated with garba and dandiya raas at at Anchorvale CC, Novotel Clarke Quay, and Goodman Art Centre! Did you go?
