Hello Yasmin

This morning, my toddler and I attended our first children’s theatre performance here in Singapore!

PLAYtime!, presented by Esplanade—Theatres on the Bay, is an interactive theatre series for children aged two to four. We saw Hello Yasmin directed by Ian Loy with music by Stan X Soap. Hello Yasmin is just one in a series of recent PLAYtime! productions; previous plays have included Hello PaigeHello Ling (in English and Mandarin), and Hello Adam.

In Hello Yasmin, young Yasmin shows tots that all glorious green growing things start from a seed. Actors Cheryl Kuek and Rizman Putra, who each played multiple roles, were very good; they had incredible presence and verve and encouraged us both to laugh and dance and sing.

Hello Yasmin did run a smidge long, especially for such a young audience (an entire scene could have been, and should have been, excised); had a few bits of questionable dialogue (“Boys are always late!” Yasmin squeals. Gender essentialism, whaa?); and had an unusual musical interlude (“Pomp and Circumstance Marches”).

But that’s just nit-picking. Hello Yasmin was a wonderfully entertaining way to spend a Friday morning! Hello Yasmin closes on February 27. Weekday performances are at 9:30AM and 11AM. Weekend performances are at 11AM, 2PM, and 4PM.
