A New Tradition for the New Year

One of the best things about life in Singapore, in my opinion, is the weather. It is perpetual summer! Every day is perfect for a swim or a barbecue. Another thing I appreciate here is how green the city is. For its size and density, Singapore has a generous number of well-planned and well-maintained parks and nature preserves.

So, my resolution this year is to instate a new family tradition: Sunday evening picnics. Picnics are my favorite warm-weather pastime. Who doesn’t like eating it the open air with loved ones?

We spent the late afternoon and early evening of New Year’s Day in Labrador Nature Reserve along Singapore’s southern coast. It’s one of my most favorite places in Singapore. It is home to the mainland’s only rocky shore and coral reef (which avoided the destruction suffered by other coral reef communities on the main island due to land reclamation).

We lingered on the grass and enjoyed the breeze and breathtaking views of the South China Sea, the Southern Islands, and the parade of sea vessels that line the horizon.

Next week? Bishan Park.

To you and yours: Happy 2013! I wish you immense happiness and boundless creativity this year!
